VIMS' Outstanding Professionals and Professional Faculty Researcher Award honors success in conducting original research, a record of scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications, success in procuring grants, and service as a reviewer. The award also recognizes authorship of gray literature and grant reports, management of research programs, and service as an officer in scientific societies.

The 2019 PPFA Researcher Award goes to Dr. Troy Tuckey.

Troy D. TuckeyDr. Troy Tuckey is invaluable to the Office of Research and Advisory Services and is an excellent VIMS ambassador to many of our advisory clients. According to Dr. Mark Luckenbach, Associate Dean of Research & Advisory Service, when an agency contacts VIMS regarding permit applications that might affect fisheries resources, Troy is one of the ‘go to people’ to develop a response. Troy’s expertise was critical in developing VIMS’s evaluation of the impact of the expansion of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on fish and how to mitigate those impacts. Troy presents information in a friendly, but authoritative, style. At a meeting with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission last year, Troy advised the Commissioners that theyneed to shorten the amount of time allowed each year to work on a project on the Chickahominy River to protect larval and juvenile striped bass. So, the next time you catch a whopper of a striped bass, you can thank Troy Tuckey. For those of you that know Troy, you know that he is quick with a smile and a helping hand. From giving a ride to his neighbor whose car seems to always be in the shop to answering emails from Advisory Services while doing field work in Nepal, Troy is always willing to help.
