Outstanding Faculty Advisory Service Award
This is an alternating award given every 3 years to a faculty member who has excelled in teaching, research, or advisory service.
This year's winner of the Outstanding Advisory Service Award is Dr. Bill DuPaul.
Bill spent most of his academic life at VIMS earning both his M.A. (1968) and Ph.D. (1972) from the College of William and Mary. He joined the VIMS faculty in 1977 as Chair of the Department of Advisory Services and Coordinator of the Sea Grant Advisory Program, and he provided leadership to these programs until his retirement in 2009. Bill has a rare ability to span the spectrum from pure science to delivery of practical guidance to a broad audience of users. Within Advisory Services he built great teams and mentored them well, and together they developed programs that have received national recognition. The Bridge K-12, Clean Marina, finfish and shellfish aquaculture, and crab shedding programs are fine examples, and who could not love the VIMS Chefs' Symposium and Seafood Seminar? But perhaps his greatest contribution has been the rebuilding of Virginia's scallop fishery; an effort built on sound science, countless hours at sea on commercial vessels, collaboration with an industry whose members respect him enormously, and contributions to management that, to quote a NEFMC council member "have literally revolutionized the scallop management program while at the same time allowing us to meet our conservation and management goals."
For these reasons and more, Bill DuPaul is highly deserving of the VIMS Outstanding Faculty Advisory Service Award.
Thank you, Bill—you are an excellent role model for those contributing to Advisory Service at VIMS and elsewhere, and we all are grateful for your contributions.
