Workshop Overview:
The sea scallop fishery along the U.S. East Coast has enjoyed an extended period of high landings and revenue. Despite this era of elevated productivity, concerns about the long-term sustainability of the resource due to natural recruitment variability, offshore wind development, and climate change are growing. Stock enhancement offers a possible avenue to maintain or increase production for the sea scallop fishery in federal waters.
This workshop aims to gather experts and stakeholders to discuss the current state of knowledge around scallop enhancement, share research and technical expertise, and outline a roadmap for future efforts. The event will feature presentations and interactive discussions on the following themes:
Seed Production:
- Challenges and opportunities with hatcheries, spat collection techniques, and nursery production.
Transplanting:
- Enhancing historic fishing grounds through the movement of scallops from natural beds or hatcheries.
Ecological Considerations:
- Addressing predator control, disease, density dependence, and the impacts of climate change.
Regulatory & Management Regimes:
- Navigating permitting requirements, current management challenges and opportunities, and socio-economic considerations.
Who Should Attend:
- Sea scallop industry members
- Scallop enhancement practitioners
- State and federal fisheries managers
