Description

Redhead grass (Potamogton perfoliatus) is characterized by extensive, branching shoots with alternate, ovate leaves that curl slightly. It can exhibit extensive morphological variation.

Distribution

P. perfoliatus is found in both fresh and brackish waters of Chesapeake Bay but more typically is found where salinities are 5-10 ppt.

Reproduction & Growth

Reproduction is asexual and sexual. Asexual reproduction occurs through growth of shoots, roots, and rhizomes, and overwintering buds. Flowers extend above the water surface and pollen is carried by air. Seeds are produced in clusters at shoot tips.
