Programs for Grades K-8
Our educational opportunities for children in kindergarten through eighth grade focus primarily on educators in local school districts, with the goal of helping them and their students to gain science literacy and meet Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOLs) for marine science. Several programs—such as Discovery Labs and summer camps—also target K-8 students directly.
Programs for High Schoolers
High-school students can engage with a number of educational and research opportunities at VIMS, from testing their mastery of oceanic knowledge as part of a Blue Crab Bowl team to participating in a 4-week summer residential program offered through the Virginia Department of Education Governor's Schools program.
Programs for College Students
College undergraduates can gain research experience at VIMS through programs offered at our Eastern Shore Laboratory, as interns in the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program, via employment in a research lab and through participation in select additional training and volunteer opportunities.
Resources for Educators
VIMS offers a number of learning and teaching resources for formal and informal educators in the K-12 arena. Explore our professional development opportunities, lesson plans and more.
Technical Training
VIMS and its federal partners offer a number of educational opportunities for professionals and citizens involved in managing and restoring marine resources.
Public Programs
VIMS and its federal partners offer a wide variety of free public programs, including family-friendly Discovery Labs, After Hours lectures, and the popular A Scientist Walks into a Bar series. Events take place on the VIMS campus in Gloucester Point and at venues throughout Hampton Roads and the lower Chesapeake Bay region.
Volunteer with VIMS
Giving your time through volunteering is a great way to help make an impact. Volunteer positions are most commonly available with our outreach and educational programs and are occasionally available with specific research programs.
Speakers Bureau
The VIMS Speakers Bureau sends our scientists on the road! Faculty, staff and students at VIMS are available to speak to your community organization, school, club, business or other venue. The topics offered are as diverse as VIMS research. Presentations about VIMS in general are also available for those who wish to learn more about the mission of VIMS and the important work we conduct.
