Luck Stone
Luck Stone, the nation’s largest private, family-owned aggregate mining company, operates two active operations in the York River Watershed. The Spotsylvania Plant mines a granite deposit on Smith Station Road in Fredericksburg, and the Caroline Plant excavates sand and gravel near Bowling Green. Each of these plants are members of the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program that is managed by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, which means that they have been recognized for Exemplary Environmental Performance.
The Spotsylvania Plant has an unblemished record of environmental compliance with its permits for water discharge, air emissions and wetlands impacts. Plant associates contribute many volunteer hours in the local community, including driver safety lessons at nearby Massaponax High School, and participating in the Adopt-a-Highway program in the vicinity of the quarry.
To engage with the community, the Spotsylvania Plant will periodically host a Community Open House, welcoming their neighbors to see the quarry pit, the plant that crushes and distributes the rock that is mined, and the large variety of equipment that is used at the site. We are proud members of the communities we serve, and enjoy engaging our neighbors in the different aspects of our business, including our mining operations.
Activities during an Open House event include tours of the plant, viewing the equipment, driving a simulator, sitting inside of the trucks and loaders that carry tons of stone in a single load, and more. In addition, fun activities such as “boring mine holes” into cupcakes are always a treat, and examining wetland and stream habitats can lead to interesting discoveries.
